Google Ads is the fastest way for a B2B tech company to reach people who are already looking. Someone typing “inventory management software for distributors”, “hire Flutter developers” or “Odoo implementation partner India” has a project in mind. Those clicks are expensive, often INR 100 to 600 in India and much more in the US, so each one needs to land on a page that turns interest into a demo, a trial or an RFQ.
The common failure is optimising for the wrong conversion. The account counts every form fill or trial sign-up as success, Google’s bidding chases the cheapest ones, and the sales team receives students, job seekers and freelancers asking for a free version. Six months later, the founder says “Google Ads does not work for us” when the real issue is that the account was never told what a good lead looks like.
Common paid search problems in B2B tech
- Job and learning searches: keywords like “Salesforce developer” or “DevOps services” also match “Salesforce developer jobs” and “DevOps course”. Without negative keywords, a big share of spend goes to people who want to work for you, not hire you.
- Trial sign-ups that never activate: the account reports a healthy cost per trial, but most trials are personal Gmail addresses that never log in twice.
- No competitor strategy: buyers search “Freshdesk alternative” or “Zoho People pricing”. Either you have a sensible campaign for these or your competitors take the clicks.
- Brand searches left open: a competitor or reseller bids on your company name, and your own brand campaign does not exist, so prospects searching for you click someone else.
- One landing page for everything: every ad sends people to the homepage, so a search for “attendance software for construction sites” lands on a generic HR platform page.
What we set up and run
- Campaigns split by intent: brand, solution keywords, industry or use-case keywords, competitor and alternative terms, and remarketing, each with its own budget and target cost.
- Negative keyword lists for tech: jobs, salary, course, certification, free download, crack, interview questions, tutorial, internship, plus terms found weekly in the search term report.
- Use-case landing pages: pages that match the search, with a short demo form or calendar booking, pricing visibility, integration logos and a relevant customer story.
- Offline conversion import: we connect your CRM so that Google learns from leads sales marks as qualified, meetings held and deals won, not just raw form fills. HubSpot, Salesforce and Zoho all support this route.
- Geo and language strategy: separate campaigns for India, the US, UK, Middle East or Australia, with ad schedules matching business hours in each market and copy written for local buyers.
- YouTube and Demand Gen for remarketing: product walkthrough videos shown to people who visited pricing or started a trial but did not continue.
For IT services firms, we usually add a qualifying question to the RFQ form, such as project budget range or start date. It lowers the number of leads slightly and saves sales a lot of time. A form that says “budget below INR 1 lakh” on a custom ERP enquiry tells you something before anyone picks up the phone.
Keyword groups and how much to bid on each
| Group | Example searches | Our usual approach |
|---|---|---|
| Solution | “field service management software”, “managed AWS services” | Core budget, exact and phrase match |
| Use case or industry | “CRM for real estate brokers”, “HIPAA compliant app development” | Often the cheapest qualified leads |
| Competitor | “Freshservice alternative”, “Darwinbox pricing” | Small budget, honest comparison page |
| Brand | your company and product names | Always on, low cost, protects your name |
A note on competitor bidding: bidding on a competitor’s name as a keyword is generally allowed by Google, but using their trademark in your ad text can be restricted. We keep ad copy about your product and make comparison claims only where you can back them up.
How an engagement runs
Weeks 1 to 3: account audit or set-up, conversion tracking with GA4 and Google Tag Manager, CRM offline conversion connection, two or three landing pages for your strongest use cases. Starting budgets for India-focused SaaS are often INR 75,000 to 2 lakh a month; US campaigns need more.
Months 2 to 3: search term cleanup several times a week at first, bid adjustments by keyword group, landing page tests on form length and offer (demo versus trial versus pricing call). We expect to cut a good share of the starting keywords.
Months 4 to 6: once enough qualified conversions flow back from the CRM, bidding moves to value-based or qualified-lead targets. We add competitor and remarketing campaigns where the core is profitable. Because B2B deals close over months, we judge spend on pipeline created, then revisit as revenue comes in.
We are also cautious with Performance Max for B2B. It can find buyers, but without strong CRM signals it tends to spend on cheap display placements and form fills from unrelated audiences. We only add it once the search campaigns and offline conversions are reliable, and we review its placements and search themes closely.
What we report
- Cost per sales-qualified lead and per meeting held
- Pipeline value and closed revenue from paid search, from your CRM
- Trial-to-activation rate for trials that came from ads
- Search impression share on brand and core solution terms
- Wasted spend on irrelevant searches, trending down month by month
Expect the first two months to look expensive. B2B accounts need time and conversion data before the cost per qualified lead settles, and judging them in week three usually leads to the wrong cuts.

Frequently asked questions
Should we optimise Google Ads for trials or demo requests?
For whichever action predicts revenue. Many SaaS accounts optimise for trials and end up with low-quality sign-ups. Import activated trials, qualified leads or meetings from your CRM as conversions, and let bidding learn from those. Raw sign-ups can stay as a secondary signal.
Is it worth bidding on competitor names?
Sometimes. Searches for alternatives to a competitor show buyers comparing options, and a fair comparison page can convert well. Keep the budget small, avoid using their trademark in ad text, and watch quality closely. If those clicks do not turn into pipeline after a couple of months, stop.
What budget do we need for Google Ads as a B2B SaaS?
For India, INR 75,000 to 2 lakh a month is a practical start for one or two core use cases. US and UK markets cost several times more per click. With less budget, focus on brand and the narrowest use-case keywords so the account still gets enough data to learn.
Our IT services company sells to the US. Can we run ads from India?
Yes. Campaigns can target US locations and run on US business hours. Landing pages need to address US buyers’ concerns: time zone overlap, contracts, data security, communication and relevant case studies. Expect higher costs per click than in India, and budget accordingly.
