Search intent in coaching comes in waves. In the weeks after NEET results, “neet repeater batch near me” and “neet dropper course fees” spike. After board results in May, parents search for two-year classroom programmes. UPSC aspirants search for foundation batches around prelims results and again when new batches are announced. Google Ads can put you in front of each wave the day it starts, which SEO cannot always do.
The catch is cost. National chains bid on almost every exam-related term, so clicks are expensive, and most institutes waste a large share of the budget on people searching for admit cards, answer keys and free PDFs. Campaigns are often set up once by a freelancer with broad match keywords, pointed at the homepage, and left running at the same budget all year. When results season ends, nobody revisits the settings.
Where coaching ad budgets leak
Informational searches. “neet result 2026”, “jee main admit card” and “upsc syllabus pdf” bring huge volume and almost no admissions. Without a strong negative keyword list, these queries can eat a big part of the spend in result season.
Bidding wars with national brands. Competing for “iit jee coaching” against companies with national budgets drives up cost per click without any edge. Local and batch-specific terms are cheaper and convert better.
Optimising for the wrong conversion. If Google is told that every form submission is a success, it will find more people who submit forms, many of them students wanting free material. Admissions happen two or three weeks later after a counselling visit, and Google never hears about them.
Ads running after counsellors go home. A parent who taps a call extension at 10 pm and hears an unanswered ring will rarely try again. Call ads should follow your counselling hours, with forms or WhatsApp taking over outside them.
Radius set too wide. A 30 km radius around a Gurgaon centre includes most of South Delhi and Faridabad. Very few Class 11 parents will make that daily commute.
What we set up and manage
- Campaigns split by exam and batch: separate campaigns for two-year JEE, NEET dropper, UPSC foundation, optional subjects and crash courses, so each gets its own budget and message.
- A negative keyword list built for coaching: admit card, answer key, result, syllabus, free, pdf, cutoff, job, salary, and a long tail of others refined weekly from the search terms report.
- Landing pages per batch: start date, timings, fee range, faculty and a demo class booking button. Never the homepage.
- Different ads for parents and aspirants: a parent searching “neet coaching fees gurgaon” sees fee range, timings and safety, while a dropper searching “neet repeater batch” sees the test schedule, faculty and batch size.
- Call extensions and call-only ads for parents: many parents prefer to speak to a counsellor directly, especially in the evening.
- Offline conversion tracking: we connect your CRM so Google learns which clicks became counselling visits and paid admissions, rather than form fills alone.
- Scholarship test campaigns: a lower-cost entry point that brings serious students to your centre on a fixed date.
- A season-wise budget plan: heavier spend when your audience is searching, lighter in the months they are not.
An example of how budget weight shifts through the year for a JEE and NEET institute:
| Period | What people search | Budget weight |
|---|---|---|
| Jan to Mar | Crash courses, test series, scholarship tests for next session | Medium |
| Apr to Jun | Two-year classroom after boards, dropper batches after results | High |
| Jul to Sep | Late joiners, weekend batches, foundation courses | Low to medium |
| Oct to Dec | Early research for next year, foundation for Classes 8-10 | Low |
The exact shape depends on your mix. A UPSC institute follows its own rhythm around prelims and mains, and a centre focused on Classes 8-10 foundation peaks at different times again. Where you have past enquiry data, we build the calendar from that rather than from assumptions.
Keeping ad copy within the rules
Google Ads text, sitelinks and landing pages count as advertising under the CCPA’s 2024 guidelines for coaching. Headlines like “100% Selection” or “Assured AIR Under 1000” are out. A result claim such as an AIR mentioned in an ad must belong to a student who actually took the course being advertised, with their consent, and the landing page needs to show the details: course, duration and paid or free status. Google’s own misrepresentation policy can also disapprove ads with claims you cannot support. Lead forms need DPDP-compliant consent, with parental consent for students under 18. We keep a record of the source for every claim we put in an ad, in case it is ever questioned.
How the engagement runs
Month 1: account audit or fresh build, conversion tracking including CRM import, landing pages for your main batches and the first campaigns. Starting four to six weeks before a peak gives time to gather data. If you have no CRM yet, a shared Google Sheet with lead status is enough to begin with.
Months 2-3: weekly search term reviews, bid adjustments, ad copy tests and landing page changes. We meet your counsellors to learn which leads were genuine.
Months 4-6: shift budget to the campaigns with the lowest cost per admission, add remarketing for visitors who did not book, and plan the next season’s calendar.
What we report
- Cost per admission, using CRM data, as the main number
- Cost per demo class attended and per counselling visit
- Lead quality as rated by your counsellors
- Impression share on key batch searches during peak weeks
- Wasted spend removed through negatives each month
- Calls answered versus missed during campaign hours
If you are already running Google Ads, give us read-only access and we will show you how much of last season’s spend went to admit card and answer key searches. That free audit usually makes the next step obvious, and it takes us about a week.
Frequently asked questions
What budget do we need for Google Ads?
It depends on city, exam and competition. Clicks on NEET and JEE terms can be expensive in metros. We usually suggest starting with one or two batches and a budget that buys enough clicks to judge results within six to eight weeks, then scaling the campaigns that bring counselling visits rather than spreading thin across everything.
Should we bid on competitor institute names?
Sometimes, but carefully. You cannot use a competitor’s trademark in your ad text, and those clicks are often expensive with low conversion. It can work for a nearby rival during admission season if your offer is clearly different. We test it in a small, separate campaign before putting real money behind it.
Why are we getting so many junk leads?
Usually because of broad match keywords, weak negatives and Google being told that any form fill is a win. Students searching for free notes submit forms happily. Fixing the negative list, qualifying the form and feeding paid admissions back to Google generally improves lead quality within a few weeks.
Google Ads or Meta ads, which is better for coaching?
They do different jobs. Google Ads catches people already searching for a batch, which is higher intent and higher cost. Meta builds awareness and reaches parents who are not searching yet. Most institutes need Google during peak season and Meta to fill seminars and demo classes before it.
Can you track actual admissions instead of only leads?
Yes, if your CRM records the outcome and a lead’s source. We set up offline conversion imports so paid admissions are sent back to Google Ads. It needs some discipline from counsellors in updating lead status, but it is the only way to know your real cost per admission.
